Dan Gilbert’s Son Underwent Many Brain Surgeries

Many basketball fans must remember Dan Gilbert’s son, Nick, for representing the Cleveland Cavaliers during the NBA lotteries at the 2011 and 2013 NBA drafts. The Cavs won the lottery in 2011 and earned the No.1 overall pick. They used the pick in 2011 to draft Kyrie Irving.

Unfortunately, Nick was born with a genetic nerve disorder, Neurofibromatosis (NF). The condition causes tumors to grow anywhere in the body. He was diagnosed at fifteen months and underwent several brain surgeries and chemotherapy later. Moreover, the billionaire’s son had his first chemotherapy at the age of five. Afterward, he had emergency surgery to remove a tumor from his brain when he was 10.

Nick underwent eight-hour-long major brain surgery in February 2018. As per ESPN, the young Gilbert’s surgery was performed at a Detroit hospital. Nick’s father posted an update about his surgery on Twitter and said he was recovering well.

Additionally, Dan Gilbert’s son’s left eye has only 25% vision, and can’t see with his right eye. Nevertheless, he is fine now and has sound health. Also, after going through his social media account, Nick seems to be enjoying his life.

His Parents Established A Foundation To Find A Cure For NF

In a talk with Fox 2, the investor said that his eldest is the happiest kid he knows. Around 2006, Jennifer and Dan decided to share the same chance and hope their son has to thousands of young people who cope with NF. Joining them was Victor Chukuekwe, one of the NF survivors who is now a doctor.

Furthermore, Nick’s parents founded the Gilbert Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization that has donated millions in research to find a cure for NF. Its primary motto is to accelerate the cure for Neurofibromatosis. Moreover, the Michigan state graduate’s mother and father have also made donations to Gene Therapy Initiative, Vision Restoration Initiative, etc.
