His parents first assumed it was just a teenager experimenting with those kinds of stuff. But this experimentation turned into addiction by the end of his school years.
As a result, Brent’s parents sent him to a rehab center. He came back and seemed to have turned his life around. Eventually, the handsome guy made it to the University of South California. Not only that, but he even got on the dean’s list for the third semester and had aimed to be a lawyer. He was finishing his education at USC and had it all organized to go to law school. Moreover, Brent was engaged, and the wedding was planned.
But, the story of Robert Shapiro’s son took a tragic turn in October 2005. The doting dad got a call from Brent Shapiro’s fiancée, who said he wasn’t breathing with her shaking voice. The beloved son was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center but passed away a day later. The Shapiro couple still misses their baby boy dearly.
His Parents Turned Their Pain To A Vision
After the tragic death of Brent, his parents must have been devasted with unbearable pain. However, they didn’t choose to suffer but help other young and energetic youths battling the chemical dependency disease. As a result, they established a nonprofit organization, The Brent Shapiro Foundation. In an interview, Robert and his wife shared how they launched the foundation with the belief of helping others overcome substance addiction.
Additionally, the foundation aims to remove the stigma and isolation associated with drug and alcohol addiction. It also provides educational tools for parents in communicating with their kids. Furthermore, in a partnership with the Boys & Girls Club, the organization has established a substance abuse prevention program, Brent’s Club. It rewards young people who complete the program with scholarships for college.
Nevertheless, Robert Shapiro’s son was a bright and energetic person. He was doing great both in his personal and professional life. But, his story ended tragically. However, he is a lucky person to be born to such amazing parents. Brent’s memory will forever remain in his family’s hearts.
