Lynn Williams, an American soccer player, is back with the national team for a training camp to help the U.S. prepare for the World Cup in 2023. The NJ/NY Gotham FC forward immediately made up for missed time with the USWNT after being out for nearly a year due to a severe hamstring injury.

American women’s soccer coach Vlatko Andonovski unveiled a 24-player roster that included Lynn before the team’s January training camp in New Zealand. USWNT supporters are thrilled to see Williams back on the soccer field after a long absence. Now, let’s discover more about the injury to Lynn Williams and how it affected her national team.

Inspired By Her Uncle

Lynn Williams was born Lynn Raenie Williams on May 21, 1993, in Fresno, California. She and her family relocated to a pecan farm in Clovis, California, just outside Fresno, when she was eight. David Williams, her father, was employed in waste management, while her mother, Christine Williams, taught physical education to seventh graders. Lynn went to Bullard High School, where she competed on the varsity squad and was honored as an all-league and all-area performer.

Curtis Williams, Williams’ uncle, was a star football player at the University of Washington. In a match against Stanford in 2000, a helmet-to-helmet hit left him paralyzed underneath the neck. Lynn still honors her uncle by writing his number 25 on her wrist before matches, even though he passed away 19 years ago.

Amazing Soccer Career

The Western New York Flash picked Lynn Williams in the 2015 NWSL College Draft. She made her club debut on April 12, 2015, and netted four goals in 17 appearances. Williams, who was included in the 2016 NWSL Best XI and was voted NWSL Most Valuable Player, was one of the league’s breakout players in 2016. In January 2017, the Western New York Flash officially sold to new ownership and rebranded as the North Carolina Courage.

Williams departed for Australia in October 2019 to sign a loan agreement with Western Sydney Wanderers of the W-League. The gifted forward was transferred to the Kansas City Current on January 10, 2022, by the North Carolina Courage for $200,000 in allocation money. Williams was moved from Kansas City Current to Gotham FC on January 12, 2023, during the NWSL Draft.

Suffered A Right Leg Injury

Lynn Williams suffered an acute injury to her right leg in March and missed the remainder of the 2022 NWSL seasons, as per the report made by The Kansas City Current. The injury happened on March 18 while Kansas City was playing in its opening Challenge Cup match. Williams’ condition was not described explicitly in Kansas City’s announcement, but according to Vlatko, head coach of the U.S. women’s national team, it was a hamstring injury.

Williams made her long-awaited comeback to the field in New Zealand for the United States’ opening game of 2023. However, even her chances of returning to the camp in January were uncertain. Moreover, Williams has a long history of hip injuries that started with a hip labral tear she experienced in college. Besides, she shares a close bond with her club and national team colleague, Midge Purce.

Impact of Her Injury on USWNT

Lynn Williams is one of the team’s most crucial players for the United States Women at the moment. She earned her first call-up to the American women’s national team in October 2016. Williams came on as a substitute at the start of the second half and netted the team’s quickest debut goal 49 seconds after coming on.

The 29-year-old was added to the United States team roster for the 2020 Summer Olympics on June 23, 2021. She has so far made 52 appearances for her country and scored 15 goals. Lynn made her comeback to the U.S. women’s national team in New Zealand earlier this year after her horrible injury. The American athlete received her first 2023 start when the USWNT defeated Japan 1-0 in the SheBelieves Cup.

Overall, Lynn Williams appears to have fully recovered from her injury and is currently doing well. We hope she continues to do what she enjoys while helping her team succeed. We wish her the very best of luck in the future.
