Hulu and FX are back with their brand new historical drama series, Shogun. The historical drama premiered on February 27, 2024, and will consist of ten episodes.

The Plot: Collision of Ambition

Set in the 17th century, the story is recounted through the eyes of British hero John Blackthorne. He is a sailor who goes from outsider world to samurai while being exploited as a pawn in Japanese commander Toranaga’s ambition to get to the top of the ruling chain, or Shogun.

The plot mainly revolves around the collision of two ambitious individuals from different worlds with a mysterious woman samurai. Interestingly, Shogun is a fictionalized story of actual events and history.

Shogun Episode One Anjin Review

Episode one begins in Osaka, Japan. The reigning Taiko has died and left a very young heir to rule. Five Warrior Lords embroils in a bitter fight. The show’s title alludes to their desire for absolute power.

Similarly, an English pilot, Blackthorne, is on board a ship, Erasmus, carrying a lot of weaponry. Lost on its course, Erasmus crashes onto Japanese land. Moreover, the samurai who find the ship takes Blackthorne and other survivors captive.

At Osaka Castle, Yoshii Toranaga meets with four regent council members. They are not happy with him as he has become more powerful than them after Taiko’s death. Yoshii even took the heir’s mother hostage at his castle.

However, we subsequently learn that Toranaga has a close relationship with the heir and confides in another assistant that he is attempting to shield him from the council. He has no desire to become Shōgun, seeing the title as a remnant from the past.

As the episodes move forward, Blackthorne meets locals, including Kashigi Yabushige. Even though Blackthorne is suspected of being a pirate, Yabushige lets him go due to lack of evidence.

Later, we find out that Kashigi has already decided to loot the weapons inside Erasmus to give him the upper hand in the war if Toranga is killed.

Finally, the episode ends with Toranaga, Mariko, and Blackthorne sitting face to face. Similarly, it has created a lot of speculation on what to expect from other episodes.
