Kaitlin Willow Olson, simply known as Kaitlin Olson, is an American actress, best known for her role on the FX comedy series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia as Deandra “Sweet Dee” Reynolds. Furthermore, she is also known for her role as Cricket Melfi in the comedy series Flipped, for which she was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series.
In addition, Olson earned a nomination for the 74th Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for playing the role of DJ in HBO’s Hacks. However, many people might not know that she had once gotten into a serious accident in the past. They might be eager to know about it. So, let’s find out what happened during and after Kaitlin Olson’s accident in this article.
Fractured Her Skull At Twelve
Kaitlin Olson was about twelve years old when she was in a grave bike accident. In an interview with Glamour, she revealed that her mother had sent her out of their house on a bike ride with a friend wearing a helmet. However, as soon as the actress went out of the neighborhood, she took it off. Although she knew that she should wear it, she didn’t as it was a time when no one else wore a helmet.
Unfortunately, the accident was so serious that Olson sustained a fractured skull that left a hole in her head. In addition, she also smashed her face, and as a consequence, she had to shave her head and have surgery. Furthermore, the incident occurred when she was about to go to junior high school. So, on her first day, she had to go with a swollen face, a shaved head, and a scar. Also, some kids were quite mean to her at school.
As per the Emmy nominee, it was likely the greatest adversity to have ever happened to her that took her years to fight back. She relied on her sense of humor to get through that phase. Furthermore, years later, she found the theater department and felt comfortable.

Kaitlin Olson Got Hurt During Filming
Unfortunately, a fatal injury while young was not the only accident that Olson got into. The 46-year-old actress got hurt more than just once while filming. Back in 2013, a cut injury landed her in the hospital. While filming for an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia in an abandoned warehouse, Kaitlin slipped on a steel grate and cut her leg. In an interview with Yahoo! News, she said that she ripped her leg open and that there was a lot of blood.
The actress’ shin bone could be seen, so it must have been quite painful. Yet, Olson was extremely composed and calmly said she applied pressure on it. Regrettably, after the grate incident, she sustained an injury while filming a scene of her banging her head against a car door. Despite having a stunt double, the Flipped star decided to film the shot herself. As a result, she had to see a chiropractor numerous times afterward.
In addition, although it wasn’t on set, Kaitlin has once also broken her back. During a 4th of July picnic, a neighbor decided to pick her up way over his head, and he dropped her on the cement on her back. Due to this, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia had to adapt to her limited mobility.
Is Conscious of Her Kids
Currently, the Emmy nominee enjoys a blissful marital life with her It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-star and husband, Rob McElhenney. The couple exchanged their wedding vows on September 27, 2008, and has since welcomed two children together. They share sons Axel Lee McElhenney, born on September 1, 2010, and Leo Grey McElhenney, born on April 5, 2012.

In the interview with Glamour, the actress revealed that she was very conscious of how to parent her kids about safety. She does not believe that it’s always helpful to say, “Be careful!” as the little ones would then get fearful. So, Olson tries to teach them to be aware of their surroundings and keep themselves safe.
Nonetheless, the 46-year-old seems to be doing okay now. She and her husband, Rob McElhenney, are amazing parents to their sons. The kids must enjoy a comfortable life with their mother and father. We wish the family of four leads a happy and healthy life in the future.
