The Shapiro Couple Lost Their First Son
Sadly, the Shapiro-Thomas couple lost their eldest son, Brent, due to the chemical dependency disease in October 2005. He grew up in Los Angeles in a loving family filled with friends and family. He loved sports, especially ice hockey.
Moreover, Brent was a teenager when Linell and her husband found out that he was smoking. But the loving parents let it slide, thinking that it was a teenage boy just experimenting. However, his test turned into a battle for his life. Over the next few years, Robert Shapiro’s son went to rehab several times.
After returning from rehab, Brent seemed to have turned his life around. He even got into the University of South California and was doing great. But his addiction took over, and he passed away at the age of 24.
Robert Shapiro’s Wife Is A Co-founder Of A Foundation
After the tragic death of their beloved child, Linell and her husband founded a nonprofit organization, The Brent Shapiro Foundation. The married couple turned their tragedy into their vision to conquer alcohol and drug dependency.
Furthermore, in a partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of America, the organization created a substance abuse prevention program called Brent’s Club. They reward kids who agree to remain sober through their high school. In addition, those who complete the program get college scholarships.
Additionally, the Brent Shapiro foundation’s mission is to remove the stigma and isolation associated with drug and alcohol addiction. They also provide support to parents on how to communicate with their children. Above all, Linell and her spouse proved that pain is inevitable, but suffering is a choice.
