Hitesh Sharma, who goes by the stage name Tesher is a Canadian singer born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan. Belonging to Indian heritage, it was only natural for him to grow up listening to Bollywood songs. Tesher’s father, Mike Sharma, asked Tesher to do the DJing. It could be his first step toward a musical career.

The Regina native had early exposure to the music and started creating Bollywood and hip-hop fuse to create mashups in his high school years. One of his early mashups, Lil Nas X‘s Old Town Road vs. Ramta Jogi, went viral on TikTok. Shortly after his viral mashup, in February 2020, Tesher released “Young Shahrukh,” a musical homage to Shahrukh Khan, an Indian actor known as the King of Bollywood.

With this newfound stardom, Sony Music India, an Indian record label, recognized him. He later released Young Shahrukh on it. As of January 2023, Young Shahrukh has over 21 million views on Sony Music India‘s Youtube channel.

Tiktok app has helped Sharma land his major label deal. Even though his Indian heritage hugely inspires Tesher’s music, it has now found a global audience and represents south Asian music worldwide.

Tesher’s Biggest Hit

There’s an old Indian proverb that suggests hitting the iron when it’s hot. Tesher did precisely the same. With the rising interest in his music, he released Yummy Jalebi, inspired by Justin Bieber‘s Yummy with new vocals and production, and it went viral on TikTok and Instagram. After the song went viral, he released an extended version called Jalebi Baby on November 13, 2020.

In 2021, Capitol Records signed a worldwide deal with the Jalebi Baby singer in partnership with Universal Music India. After the song’s huge success, Tesher released a remix version of Jalebi Baby with American singer Jason Derulo. Tesher received a nomination for Breakthrough Artist of the Year and performed it live with Simu Liu at the Juno Awards of 2022.
