Three of the Oddest Celebrity Endorsed Products

We live in a time where consumer culture can be overwhelming. Adverts for new products appear on television or bombard us on social media every minute of the day. To get themselves seen, many new additions employ the backing of celebrities to help elevate them above the crowd. In some instances, these are successful, while others crash and burn. Below, we give three of the oddest celebrity-endorsed products that have ever existed.

Ellen DeGeneres Slot Machine

Ellen DeGeneres has added a lot of strings to her bow. She is a comedian, television presenter, actress, and writer to name a few. Her career started in the early eighties on the stand-up comedy circuit. This then evolved into her role as an actress in movies and her own sitcom. Recently, she has had a highly successful talk show.

One of her oddest decisions was to endorse her own slot machine. So popular is the Ellen brand that she got two: “The Ellen DeGeneres Show Featuring Twelve Days of Giveaways” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show Featuring Ellen’s Dance Party.” Created by company IGT, Ellen herself voiced the introductions and was involved in the game’s design.

Celebrity slot machines are not a rarity. Casino Smash has a list of the best US casinos on its website. Ranked by several factors, it also includes the range of games on offer. A glance through the top casinos like BetMGM and DraftKings shows a whole range of celebrity-endorsed casino games. From James Dean to David Hasselhoff, it seems like your slot machine is a true badge of honor.

Jessica Simpson Edible Cosmetics

Jessica Simpson had a glittering pop career in the early 2000s. As such, it is would have been quite an astute business move to release her line of cosmetics. Who wouldn’t want to replicate the pop star’s beauty? What made her cosmetic line odd, however, was that Simpson’s Dessert Edible line could also be consumed.

Even stranger was marketing for the brand. Many of the products and titles were highly suggestive such as the Delicious Kissable Hot Body Topping. To make it odder, Jessica Simpson and her husband at the time, Nick Lachey, would try out the products on each other at promotional events, eating the cosmetics from each other’s faces.

The line faced a range of lawsuits, including one from a company that claimed they were owed $200,000 for products they had made for the brand. In 2005, even more, products were released for a younger audience. However, by 2006 the line ended.

Kardashian Kard

The Kardashians have amassed a huge fortune by doing very little other than cleverly marketing themselves as a brand. Love them or hate them, many of their ventures have proven extremely successful. However, the Kardashian Kard was not one of them.

The concept was to have a branded Kardashian prepaid debit card. Charging very high fees it had a $ 100-a-year fee to own it, along with exorbitant charges for using the card itself. The product was so bad, that it even drew criticism from the Connecticut Attorney General at the time.

Seeing the massive public relations backlash the item was having, the family quickly backed away from the product. Within a month of launching the product was shelved, and the family was on to their next venture.
