Ilhan Abdullahi Omar is the United States representative for Minnesota’s congressional district. She has been in the position since 2019 and is a member of the Democratic Party.
Minnesota Rep Ilhan Omar speech has been circulating online where she addressed the Somalians, as is a native of Somalia. So, what did she say, and why is she getting backlash? Keep reading to find out.
What Did the Congresswoman Say?
Following a video from a speech that showed her telling an audience that she is one of many people who are “Somalians first, Muslims second,” Ilhan Omar faced intense criticism on social media.

Omar declared that Somalia would never be in danger and that Ethiopia or anybody else could not take its waters as long as she was a member of Congress.
Ilhan continued by adding that the United States would not dare support anyone who attempted to grab Somalia’s land or oceans.
The Minnesota Representative concluded by stating that she was here to defend Somalia’s interests from within the American system so Somalinas could sleep in peace.
What Did People Think Of Minnesota Rep Ilham Omar Speech?
People on social media and some high-profile politicians criticized Ilham’s comments. Some people said that she should be deported back.
Similarly, Matt Walsh, a political author and activist, mentioned that every Republican member of Congress must demand that Ilhan Omar be removed from office and sent back to her own country.
Furthermore, Somalian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rhoda Elmi, said that Ilham’s language was regrettable and unbecoming of the office and the constituents she represents.

Will Omar Resign Amidst the Backlash?
Even though Minnesota Rep Ilahm Omar speech has received wide criticism from the public and fellow politicians, she defended her comments by saying the the translation was inaccurate.
The American congresswoman claimed that the translation was not only slanted but entirely off from what she meant to say. So, it is not clear whether she will leave her current position.
However, Omar is surely facing calls to resign in disgrace over speech in support of Somalia.
We would have to wait for an official announcement from her office regarding the current issue. Until then, we can only assume what she would do.
