Born Into a Horse Racing Family

Horse racing is not a new thing for Shug McGaughey’s baby boy. Reeve comes from a horse racing family, with most family members involved in the sport.

At first, Reeve McGaughey’s dad, Shug, is a Hall of Famer horse trainer. He has been active since 1979 and has made a name for himself in the industry.

Furthermore, as mentioned earlier, Reeve McGaughey’s sibling, Chip, is currently working as a Sales Associate at Keeneland Association. He has also served as a Brand Ambassador for America’s Best Racing for a year in 2013.

Likewise, Reeve McGaughey’s mother works in the Keeneland Shop. Their aunt, who also goes by the name Mary, worked at Keeneland’s Sales Department and eventually retired.

Furthermore, Amy LoPresti, sister of Reeve’s mother, is the wife of the trainer Charlie LoPresti and his assistant. So, it can be said that racing has been around his whole life.

Moreover, Shug McGaughey’s kid revealed that it never occurred to him that he would do something else. Ever since he was old enough to decide what he wanted to do, horse racing was the main career goal for the McGaughey child.

Is Following In His Dad’s Footsteps

Being born into a racing household, it is no surprise that Reeve wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps. The Sayre School alum went to the University of Kentucky.

Shug McGaughey’s child spent three years in the university’s Equine Science and Management Program there. He is now the new generation of the McGaughey family, coming to the fore in Thoroughbred racing.

Shug McGaughey’s baby boy worked as an assistant for LoPresti for five years. During his time with LoPresti, the stable had three-time turf champion and two-time Horse of the Year, Wise Dan.

Before that, Reeve worked with the trainer Eoin Harty, and there were also successful horses. Reminiscing about the time he worked with Wise Dan, McGaughey revealed that he taught him what a good horse should act like.

In December 2015, Reeve moved to Florida to continue his education and work for his dad. Sharing about the experience of working with his father, the junior McGaughey revealed that his old man has a very laid-back style of training, which was a different style of caring for him.

Having worked with top trainers, Reeve collected notable experiences to his resume. Eventually, he decided to go out on his own.

Shug McGaughey’s Son Ventured Out to Start on His Own

After working for his dad for several years, Reeve ventured out on his own in 2020. The father-son duo decided that after they got to Oaklawn, he would start on his own. However, they did not want to publicize the decision.

On February 2, 2020, Shug McGaughey’s boy sent out his first runner as a trainer at Arkansas’ Oaklawn Park and earned his first victory in his eighth start. He reportedly has 11 horses at Oaklawn as of 2020.

Although it has been a few years since Reeve started, he has been doing well. Also, he has been earning well. The table below shows Reeve McGaughey’s earnings so far.
