Casey Murphy is a well-known name in the American professional soccer scene. Playing as a goalkeeper, she currently plays for the North Carolina Courage of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). Additionally, she had a knack for it early on and followed her passion throughout her college days and now at the professional level.

Casey’s career as a goalkeeper is really inspirational, and many women can look up to her. Started Playing Early on

Casey was born Casey Grace Murphy in Bridgewater, New Jersey, on April 25, 1996. She is one of the two children of Jill Murphy and Michael Murphy. The talented soccer player grew up having good times with her brother, Kyle Murphy. Besides her parents and sibling, she is engaged to Chris Mirabelli, a professional track and field athlete.

Casey started playing soccer early on, at 5. Then, when she was 10, she began to play only as a goalkeeper. Regarding her education, she attended Bridgewater-Raritan High School, where she played basketball and soccer. The New Jersey native, who also trained with the PDA Slammers, was the No. 18 overall player in her hometown and was a four-star recruit. Additionally, during her senior year of high school, she won the Bridgewater-Raritan HS team MVP award. Following her successful high school career, Murphy chose to attend Rutgers University.

Casey Had a Successful Collegiate Career

When asked her reason for choosing Rutgers, Casey revealed that when she was recruited, she was looking for a school with very good academics while also being competitive in soccer. As a result, when Mike O’Neil, the head coach, and Meg Ryan, the associate head coach, contacted her, she was interested in the program. After visiting and getting to know the team more, she began loving it there.

As a freshman, Casey started all 20 matches and ended her years with a staggering record of 13-6-1, .829 save percentage, 0.64 GAA, and 63 saves. The following season, she played every minute of all 26 matches and made 80 saves. Furthermore, she redshirted as a junior to play at the 2016 FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup in Papua New Guinea with the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team.

In her senior year, Casey was named a Mac Hermann Trophy Semifinalist. She ranks second in Big Ten history and is the university’s all-time leader for career shutouts, with 45 clean sheets in her collegiate career.

Has Been Involved With Three Clubs

In January 2018, the Rutgers alum signed a professional contract to play in France’s Division 1 Féminine with Montpellier HSC. She was previously selected as the 13th overall pick by Sky Blue FC in the NWSL. Casey, who made 29 appearances for Montpellier, was selected as the Division 1 Féminine’sr keeper in the Best XI of the league.

Moreover, in May 2019, the goalkeeper signed for OL Reign FC and made a net appearance of 26 for the club across all competitions. Then, in October 2020, North Carolina Courage traded Crystal Dunn to OL Reign in exchange for Casey Murphy and $140K in allocation money. In January 2023, she signed a three-year contract with the team through the 2025 NWSL season.

Casey Murphy’s International Career

Besides club and college career, Murphy has showcased her spectacular performance in her international career. Then, after the 2014 season, she was added to the USWNT U-20 roster, and she made her debut in a shutout against Norway on March 5, 2015, in La Manga, Spain.

In addition, the 6’1″ tall goalkeeper is a US youth international at the U14, U15, U18, U20, and U23 levels. Having represented the US at the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, her international debut for the USWNT came in November 2021 against Australia.
