Lesbian Couples in the Celebrity World that We Love

When we think about famous lesbian couples, the two that probably pop into our minds first are TV celebrities Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi and MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow and Susan Mikula. Their love affairs have made news over the many years of their long-term relationships. And they are an inspiration to other lesbian couples who hope they have the same commitment and love that these two couples do.

But these two couples are not the only celebrity models of lesbian dating and love. Plenty of other couples can serve as examples of grand relationships. And they willingly share their stories and their personal lives for all the world to know.

Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli

Orange is the New Black is a series we all know well, whether we have actually viewed any of the episodes or have merely heard all of the buzz about it. But for Samira Wiley, one of the characters, and Lauren Morelli, a writer for the Netflix show, it was a life-changing event. Wiley had been an out lesbian for many years, but Morelli was in the process of questioning her gender identity when they met. Wiley was known to say that, during their exploration of a relationship, she often felt more like a confidante and amateur therapist while Morelli analyzed her identity and the failings of her own marriage.

Ultimately, the two fell in love, married in 2017, and had a daughter named George in 2021.

Robin Roberts and Amber Laign

Roberts has been a host on Good Morning America since 2005. She took a leave of absence when she battled breast cancer and a rare blood disease. It was after this long illness that she revealed publicly that she had been in a long-term relationship with a female partner, Amber Laign, thanking her for sticking by her throughout her ordeal. And later, when Amber was diagnosed with breast cancer, Roberts took a leave to care for her. They have now had 18 years together. In December 2022, Roberts announced another leave of absence, the time to get married.

Cynthia Nixon and Christine Marinoni

Nixon is probably most well-known for her role as Miranda Hobbes in the HBO series, Sex and the City. Before that, Nixon had roles on Broadway and many awards under her belt. She had a relationship with a male school teacher, and two children came from that partnership.

After that relationship ended, Nixon began dating Christine Marinoni, an educator and political activist, especially in the area of LGBTQ rights. They were married in 2012 and live in New York. Nixon herself has become an activist along with Marinoni.

Meredith Baxter and Nancy Locke

Baxter was the wife and mother in the hugely popular TV series “Family” in the late 70s. From there, she moved into movies, probably the most well-known being All the President’s Men and A Woman Scorned.

She was married and divorced three times and came away with five children. Over the course of this time, she claimed, she probably knew she was a lesbian but was in denial, not wanting to admit it to herself or others. Once her children were grown and gone, she did come out publicly, stating that she had been in a relationship with Nancy Locke, a contractor, for six years.

At 72, Baxter is no longer acting, and Lock is retired. They have settled into a quiet, comfortable senior life.

Wanda Sykes and Alex Niedbalski

Her career began as a writer for “The Chris Rock Show” on HBO from 1997-2000. Since then, she has played a number of roles on television – as Barb in “The New Adventures of Old Christine” and the HBO long-running show “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

In 2008, Sykes married Alex Niedbalski, who is originally from France. They have a set of twins together. Sykes is also a strong advocate of same-sex marriage. At 59, she shows no signs of slowing down.

There is a Point Here

These are five celebrity couples who have celebrated their lesbian love publicly. Of course, there are many, many more, but these five are enough to make the point. Love comes in many forms, and all forms are to be celebrated. And as long as well-known women continue to celebrate their love, so will the acceptance of same-sex relationships continue to grow.
