What do you think billionaires do with their money? What will you do if money is not the problem? One well-known billionaire, Mark Zuckerberg, got into the hot water for using his money. Mark is someone who tries to shun controversy but always happens to be involved in one.
Did Mark rent out the whole UFC event for himself, as the media claims? If you are curious and want to know the absolute truth, keep reading until the end. This article talks about everything that happened in UFC Vegas 61 fight.
Mackenzie Dern Spilled The Beans
Mackenzie Dern, a world-class professional MMA fighter, was the highlight of the women’s strawweight main event at UFC Vegas 61 in Sin City. Dern faced Yan Xiaonan, another top-ranked contender at the Apex. The UFC owns the Apex, a venue in Las Vegas, and VIP events are usually held there. The odd thing about this event was that it was closed off to the fans and media, making it a private event.
Before the main event, Dern spoke to reporters about what to expect from the fight. And during the interview, she made the statement saying Meta owner Mark Zuckerberg had rented out the entire event to himself, which caused quite a stir on the internet.
People had a lot of opinions regarding this. Some had to say that the UFC Vegas 61 became a plaything for a billionaire, and he should have stayed home if he had to book a private event because the best part about the UFC events live is the crowd. While others expressed support for getting to watch fighters fight and not be bothered by other masses. In the said bout, Yan defeated Dern via a majority decision.

White To The Rescue
On the ESPN+ broadcast, Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, were seen in the octagon, which fuelled the rumor. After the news of whether or not Zuckerberg rented the Apex went wild, UFC president Dana White took to Twitter and made a statement denying all the speculations. He clearly stated that Mark did not rent the UFC Apex and there’s no truth in Mark Zuckerberg booking Mackenzie Dern’s event.
When Dana revealed that the match would be closed off from fans and media without proper explanations, it appeared fishy. He also shrugged off the questions regarding his decision by giving a vague answer, like he wanted to give the media a night off. Netizens slammed Dana for turning MMA fans away and closing UFC to fans and media, making it a private fight for the Facebook owner and his wife.
Mark’s presence in the said event made sense when it was revealed that the UFC has partnered with Zuckerberg’s Meta to broadcast fight cards in virtual reality. Mark plans to allow fight fans an opportunity to watch UFC with other fans in real-time, enjoying unprecedented VR views.
Zuckerberg Himself Is A Jiu-Jitsu Enthusiast
Silicon Valley tech mogul Zuckerberg can be seen sparring with a jiu-jitsu black belt holder, Khai Wu, in his Instagram posts. He likes Jiu-Jitsu and can be seen training in MMA on his social media page. During the private event in Nevada, Zuckerberg was seen enjoying the bout like a true MMA fan, while his wife’s distaste for the fight was clearly visible.
MMA could be the billionaire’s way of relieving stress. Mark is currently working on metaverse, which is believed to be the next iteration of the internet. We look forward to what tech-savvy has to offer for Meta in the near future.
