What Was Reality’s Crime?
With a top-secret security clearance, Reality worked as a federal contractor for Pluribus International Corp in Augusta. In June 2017, she disclosed material that The Intercept used as the foundation for an article.
The post described a confidential memo from the National Security Agency that included details of a hack by Russia on a U.S. voting software supplier.
According to a federal lawsuit, Winner printed the intelligence report and shipped it to the news organization.
Further, the lawsuit noted that the Winner submitted a copy of a crumpled sensitive document. Afterward, the publication submitted that document to the NSA after finding that the information was confidential.
This prompted an internal assessment, which found that Reality was the only person with email interaction from a desk computer with the news outlet and one of just six people who had printed the material.
Reality Leigh Winner Imprisonment – Prosecution And Sentencing
Winner faced a charge of taking secret information out of a government building and mailing it to a media outlet.
At first, Reality pleaded not guilty to the charge, but in June 2018, she changed her plea to guilty to one count of felony transmission of national defense information.
The Air Force veteran pleaded guilty to breaching the 1917 Espionage Act. She received the predetermined sentence of five years and three months in prison on August 23, 2018.
There haven’t been any other individuals who have received a lengthier term for providing a media outlet with classified material.

Where Is She Now?
Winner was sent from jail to a transitional institution, the Residential Reentry Management Center in San Antonio, Texas, on June 2, 2021.
Reality’s attorney, Alison Grinter Allen, claimed that her early release from prison was due to good behavior during her incarceration rather than a compassionate release. She was still residing in Texas and on probation as of December 2022.
